Nanette's Baguette  |  By  Mo Willems

I had a nice surprise this month when I discovered Nanette’s Baguette, the latest picture book by Mo Willems.

Little Nanette the frog is sent by her mother to the bakery to pick up a delicious baguette. This is a special trip as it is the first time Nanette is off to the bakery all by herself. Things do not turn out exactly as planned, but in the end, all is well.  Nanette’s Baguette delights with a riot of vibrant color andhumor on every page.

Nanette! Today is a day Nanette won't soon forget. Today, in the kitchenette, Mom tells Nanette, that Nanette gets to get the baguette!

At this writing, our Literacy center is immersed in rhyming words and Nanette’s Baguette is the perfect book to reinforce the concept of rhyme.  It is hard to keep up with the number of words that rhyme on each page, and this makes Nanette’s Baguette even more fun!

Fans of author/illustrator Mo Willems (author many books including the Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the BusElephant and Piggie and Knuffle Bunny series) will find Nanette’s Baguette colorful design a bit of a departure from the format of his other books. You might want to share the Youtube link below with your child.  It illustrates how the bright and colorful pages of the book were created by photographing Willem’s handcrafted cardboard French village—might make your child want to create a village of their own!

With the holidays almost upon us, Nanette’s Baguette just might be the perfect gift for your child or a special friend.  Enjoy!
